Child Counselling
At Samantha Whelan Counselling and Psychotherapy Service, we are dedicated to providing compassionate and tailored children's counselling services to support young minds' emotional well-being and development. Children's counselling and psychotherapy is a therapeutic method done in the form of play therapy or creative play for children aged four and upwards. This form of therapy helps children who may not be able to express, process or articulate their problems to adults. Creative play is meeting the child where they are at and for the child to be able to "play out" their issues in a safe and supportive environment whilst helping them to explore and understand their emotions.
We assist children in developing valuable coping skills and fostering positive behavioural patterns. Therapeutic play, including creative, art and sand play therapy, helps the child to understand their feeling and emotions and helps to regulate these feelings and emotions in a non-verbal way. This type of play allows children to tell their stories and process their feelings. With a child-centred approach, we prioritise building trust and rapport, ensuring every child feels comfortable and heard on their therapeutic journey towards emotional growth and resilience.

What way do our children’s counselling services work?
Samantha Whelan Counselling and Psychotherapy Service, we organise our children’s counselling services in a way that we feel will benefit you best:
1. Firstly, we will start our counselling services with a parental intake session. In this parental intake session, we will go through an in-depth history with a parent or guardian to aid in formulating a therapeutic plan with your child.
2.After this, we will schedule and begin relationship-building sessions to make your child feel more comfortable with playing and exploring issues they are going through.
3. Parental reviews can be arranged at the end of a block of sessions (usually 6) to ascertain how child is and if further sessions are required.
How can sandplay therapy be used in children’ counselling?
Sandplay therapy in play is a therapeutic nonverbal intervention that uses toy figures and miniatures to create scenes from the child's inner world within the sandbox.
This creates a safe environment that allows the release of memories, emotions and unconscious fears whilst they are playing it out. Playing with dry and wet sand can enhance motor skills, social and emotional awareness, hand-eye coordination, language development and sparking creativity. Creative play can empower children, give them a sense of themselves, increase emotional intelligence and aids in building resilience and coping skills.
